Roblox Testing Generative A I. Tool for Game Creation
Roblox is starting to look like the type of massive metaverse platform that could be a place where, maybe, more virtual theater is staged, or meetings, or who knows what else. Being increasingly cross-platform, and full of expanding creative tools, and being VR-capable — all that sounds promising. “With generative AI, we think we can make it way easier to create these complicated objects,” Nick Tornow, VP of engineering for Roblox’s Creator Group, said in a conversation with CNET. Another tool uses AI to moderate voice conversations in real time, which could cut down on toxicity on the platform. The company started testing this tool in August and “will be deploying the English model shortly, with another four languages by the end of the year,” according to spokesperson Roman Skuratovskiy. To get better at understanding context, we leverage the native power of a transformer-based architecture, which is very good at sequence summarization.
The startup Replit, which makes a popular online programming tool, recently launched a chatbot-like interface that will not only write code but answer programming questions. Between Roblox Connect’s cross-platform avatar chat calling and all that generative AI, it’s a lot to take in, especially for me (a dad who watches his kid play Roblox all the time, but never dives in much himself). Then again, I’ve lived in a number of virtual worlds that have slowly vanished, including Microsoft’s shuttered AltSpace VR and PlayStation’s Dreams. It’ll also likely accelerate the process of creating new experiences in Roblox.

This research is open and publicly available for the community to experiment with and build upon, and we’ll continue presenting more information as we make more discoveries with it. To create a ControlNet, we clone the weights within a large diffusion model’s network into two versions. One is the trainable network (this provides the control; it is “the ControlNet”) and the other is the locked network. The locked network preserves the capability learned from billions of images and could be any previous image generator. We then train the trainable network on task-specific data sets to learn the conditional control from the additional image.
“Game developers are generally very conservative and want guarantees about the quality of player experience,” he says. In May 2022, Microsoft demonstrated a way to control characters in Minecraft by feeding naturally phrased instructions to a code-writing AI that accessed the game’s application programming interface. This is similar to what Roblox is doing but involves using AI coding to change not just game creation but gameplay itself.

Users can type natural prompts that are automatically converted into Lua, the programming language of choice for Roblox. This AI-based code assist simplifies the coding process, empowering beginners to learn and experienced developers to be more ambitious. Roblox sees a huge opportunity for the AI community itself to become creators on the platform.
However, as we can see from the Roblox Studio example that probably won’t be the case. The AI generative scripting is here to simply assist those who are already familiarized with coding and make their work a bit faster and smoother. Complete newbies to coding will have a hard time getting desired results quickly and will need to learn some basic programming in order to use this Roblox tool efficiently. Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action.
Stefano Corazza, Head of Roblox Studios, compared the tool to a Roblox tuned Code Pilot. Material generation can be used to create high quality textures to apply to objects in-game. Similar to other image Yakov Livshits generators, users can select from a number of options based on a prompt. Roblox’s material generator goes a step further — the AI will apply texture to the material to make lighting more realistic.
Even more powerful, the convergence of media supported by generative AI will allow creators to develop integrated 3D objects that come with behavior built in. For example, a creator could design a car through a simple statement such as “A red, two seater, convertible sports car with front-wheel drive”. This new creation would both look like a red sports car but also have all the behavior coded into it to be driven through a 3D virtual world.
This text filter system is great at detecting policy-violating language on Roblox since we’ve been optimizing this same filter system for years on Roblox-specific slang, abbreviations, and lingo. At the end of these layers of training, we have a model that’s capable of detecting policy violations directly from audio in real time. This work involves unique technical challenges as we tackle the ability to generate 3D models with event handlers, an animation rig, and physical properties. This work is unprecedented because making interactive content requires a deeper understanding of the generated object. With the breadth of immersive content opportunities on Roblox, we also have the unique opportunity to create a generative model for all types of content at once – image, code, 3D models, audio, avatar creation, and more.
